Norm Westwell

to our
HB City Council

Biography

Norm was born in Long Beach CA in 1959. As he grew up the Westwell family moved to the San Fernando Valley, Riverside and to finally to HB in 1975. Norm graduated from HBHS in 1977. Norm has never been timid. He bought his first dirt bike motorcycle at age 11. He became a certified scuba diver at 14. He soloed his first aircraft at 16. At 18 he set out to see the world and alone toured the United States by foot, thumb, and boxcar. Upon returning he moved into his first apartment across the street from Ed's Dairy Farm at Bolsa Chica & Heil. (Cheap rent next to a dairy farm!)

At 19 he took a job in the shipping department at a new electronics firm in hopes it would lead to a position in the field of electronics. It did, and he moved up to become an Associate Engineer. The Company won an Emmy Award for creating the first electronic video editing equipment. He also helped design, build and test video equipment used at the 1984 Olympics. He went back to school nights to earn an Electronics Technician Certificate and an AA from OCC.

At 29 Norm was responsible for the maintenance and repair of all the video equipment and the Jumbotron screen at Anaheim Stadium.

At 30 he married his stunning wife Kris and over the next 4 years had 2 children. He also joined a newly formed and growing family sports apparel manufacturing business where it remains his primary career path. Norm is Vice President of truWest, Inc., right here in HB. (www.truwest.com)

Norm got involved in politics at age 40 when his children asked why they couldn't have sparklers on the 4th of July "like dad did when he was a kid", right here in HB. Only then did he realize that his children had been robbed of a liberty he had taken for granted. He realized his children's lost liberty was a direct result of HIM not paying attention to what his government was doing. He decided to get more involved in government and committed himself to reducing its size and cost.

Norm first ran for HB City Council in 2000. (and beat current councilman Joe Carchio)
In 2002 he ran for HBCC & Ocean View School District.
In 2004 he ran for HBCC, OVSD, & State Assembly.
In 2006 he ran for HBCC, OVSD and was elected to the OVSD.

Within 48 hours of Norm taking office, the OVSD Board unanimously voted to put the Superintendent on administrative leave. The Superintendent resigned shortly thereafter. The Board hired an excellent new Superintendent and the morale of the District has dramatically improved despite enduring ongoing, punishing, state budget cuts.

In 2007 Norm was unanimously elected by the OVSD Trustees to serve as Clerk of the Board.

In 2008 the OVSD teachers union endorsed and was eager to support Norm's reelection. The union did not run a candidate against Norm and there were no other challengers, so without any opposition, an election was not necessary saving Taxpayers over $50,000 dollars.

In 2009 Norm was unanimously elected by the OVSD Trustees to serve as Board President.

Norm is currently serving in the second year of his second term as a Trustee for the Ocean View School District.

Over the years Norm has lived in many parts of town. Areas of domicile have been Warner/Graham, Bolsa Chica/Heil, 13th/Walnut, Huntington/Clay, Bushard/Garfield, Warner/Edwards.

Norm has served as the Coastal District Chair & Vice Chair of the LP Orange County Central Committee.

Norm is a member of HB Tomorrow, Elks, Chamber of Commerce & the NRA.

Norm's favorite leisurely-relaxation pastime remains riding mach 9 on his steel horse Thumper600 with family and friends.    ;-)

He remains committed to reducing the size and costs of our government.
